I just write my code on a legal pad and have my secretary type it in. As a knowledge worker, my time is much too valuable for me to be doing data entry grunt work. But seriously, I use Microsoft Expression Web more than anything else.

This post lacks of objetivity. Personally I use Eclipse but I think Netbeans is a better web editor. Text Mate do not approach 1% of the capabilities of Aptana mixed with Eclipse.

Please Write some serious post and do not fill up the front page only.
Thanks

The Microsoft prejudice is

The Microsoft prejudice is at a point where it feels irrational. So I'd take the comments regarding MS related things with a big pinch of salt. As a whole, it feels like a cursory first-impression kind of overview, so that's how I'll take it.

I mostly use Eclipse these days but I think I'd better point out more inaccuracies you have on Vim. I used it for 2 years for Java development so I got pretty impressed with it. I'm not entirely disagreeing with your assessment of it, but just pointing some things out.

First, it won't take 15 years - 15 days is more than enough to remember most of the shortcuts that you'd actually need to use on a daily basis. Syntax highlighting is not a "recent" feature. It's been around for quite a while and it's configurable and "user-definable". Vim has searchable built-in help. Vim supports plugins, some of which enable a pseudo form of code completion. The non-terminal based Vim actually has menus and mouse support.

jEdit baby!

What kind of moron pays $63 for a text editor? Srsly text editors have been free for as long as I've been alive.

I use jEdit on windows and a utility called PhraseExpress that gives you Text Mate style snippet functionality everywhere in windows... including your (free) text editor, ide, email client, browser, etc.

Hold down ctrl for multi line editing...

A couple of quick points

A couple of quick points regarding Visual Studio 2008:

Quote:
Furthermore, there’s no such thing as Open Source when it comes to Microsoft, so naturally this (VS.NET 2008) costs like $1200 bucks for the full version

Open Source and free aren't the same thing. The source to Visual Studio 2008 may not be available, but there are several free express editions of Visual Studio 2008, including Visual Web Developer 2008. I've used Visual Web Developer extensively for a number of sites, and for many folks, it has plenty of functionality.

Not sure where you're getting the $1200 figure, but the pricing for Visual Studio 2008 Standard is $299 ($199 upgrade), and for Professional the price is $799 ($549 upgrade). See here for pricing details. And if you're a college or university student, you may be able to get Visual Studio 2008 Professional, Expression Studio, SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and Windows Server 2003 R2 for free through the DreamSpark program.

It's simply incorrect to assert that "there's no such thing as Open Source when it comes to Microsoft." For example, we recently announced that we're making available the source for the entire .NET Framework for .NET 3.5, including the ability to debug within Visual Studio from your own code and step right into the framework code. There are also projects like the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit, which is a cooperative effort between Microsoft and the developer community to create a suite of controls that simplify AJAX development.
You also might want to have a look at http://port25.technet.com/ and http://www.microsoft.com/opensource/default.mspx.

Quote:
so if you want the Full Integrated MS package you get MSSQL 2008, and then you’re out another 1000+ bucks.

Not so. You can get SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for free, and it integrates nicely with Visual Studio 2008.

Quote:
Windows only, and on top of that, this is gonna leave a HUGE memory footprint when it runs.

Hmm...I've got three instances of Visual Studio 2008 Pro running on my machine at this very moment, using a grand total of less than 53MB. Reasonable people can disagree about whether that's "HUGE" or not, but I don't think so.

Quote:
Geared towards ASP, the worst server-side language on the internet.

I'll assume for the sake of argument that you mean ASP.NET here, not classic ASP, and I'm not going to argue your opinion on its merit, though clearly I disagree. But ASP.NET is not a "server-side language" it's a class framework for web development. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you probably understand the difference, but it's an important distinction, and I wouldn't want anyone who's not familiar with ASP.NET to be confused.

Everyone's got their own preferences when it comes to development environments. But let's compare actual facts, rather than incorrect assertions. As the late senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said, you're entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

(note: I'm a developer evangelist for Microsoft...take that for what you will)

it was a bit of both (I admit it) -- but I do *cringe* HAAATE any/everything Microsoft - and there are heaps upon heaps of reasons. Really though, and I think I share this sentiment with a few fellow developers: you just aren't a real developer until your on an AIX-compliant system. What are you then? You're a microsoft developer, and you sure aren't a web developer. VS is good for writing MS applications (or at least as good as writing MS applications is going to get) - but for the web in general it sucks the fat one.

...and I AM a slashdork!!

Hey guys,

1) I didn't post this! Someone from dzone contacted me and asked if it was OK if they reposted the article here

2) they didn't get the image formatting right (I was using inline css on my page to make sure they didn't get blown out of proportion

3) NO idea why this is on the Java lobby page (besides dude liked it) - I'm a ruby developer, and that's why things like intelliJ and other really Java specific stuff isn't up here

4) Kirill - if you see articles from me, just stop reading them. In A SOLID YEAR of posting you
never have ANYTHING good to say to me! admit it, you're just jealous
because I'm on the front page. Why do you keep reading if you know it's gonna be me??

By the time you do learn all the shortcuts [to Vim], you’ll (usually) have already found a better editor.

You really want to start a flame war don't you? :-)

Actually, I know you will find that once you become proficient with the shortcuts, nothing beats Vim for raw editing speed.

I'd also submit UltraEdit to that list.
